Race Captain

Kai Hayes is Race Captain for 2017/18
I started skiing as a young child. Since then I’ve always been obsessed with trying to throw myself off things and slide down rails. After doing a season instructing in Banff, Canada I have a Level 2 CISA certification and can teach in the park, so I will always be there to give friendly advice and tips, if wanted. At uni I spend my days watching edits and trying to go practice as much as possible. I will be organising everything freestyle so don’t be scared to spam me with messages. Whether you have never been in the park before or have your 10s on lock, get involved!

Training

We train regularly throughout the year in order to develop technique and improve timings, and have a big focus on getting experienced skiers involved in racing as a discipline! Most training sessions take place on dry slope (since most competitions are on dry slope, and it's cheaper) at Ski Rossendale (Greater Manchester). Usually these are every few weeks in term time and take place on a Sunday, leaving by minibus at about 10am and arriving back about 4pm. We also do some training for Varsity, on snow at Xscape Castleford (snow dome), and are planning on introducing some fitness training for our racers in 2017/18.

We put info on all our training sessions on the events section of our club Facebook page, so make sure you give our page a "like" to stay up to date!

Competitions

The University of Sheffield is a full BUCS member, and so we therefore take place in the three main University freestyle skiing competitions: BUDS (British Universities Dryslope Championships), BUiSC (British University Indoor Snowsports Competition) and the Alpine Championships (Above and Below). We also compete in the Sheffield Varsity, against Sheffield Hallam University.

We want to get as many people competing as possible, from beginner to pro, so please do talk us if you're thinking about competing. If you're new to freestyle skiing, competing these events is a great way to practise your skills, learn new tricks and meet loads of other like-minded people.
